"Its refreshing to see these young powerful S.L.A.Y. girls take initiative to promote such a powerful message to young girls"
-Ms. Valverde (College Counselor)

"You guys are doing great, keep up the good work!"
-Random student at Culver City High School

"S.L.A.Y. Day gave people inspiration to love themselves at CCMS" -Diego Lopez, Student at Culver City Middle School

"Honestly I loved it, it was a great idea to spread awareness with the whole 'self love' cause many people, boys and girls, suffer from not loving their shape which can lead to eating disorders so doing the slay week helped a lot of people I would say" -Sebastian Casillas, Student at Culver City High School

"It made me feel really safe in an enviroment where being yourself is not always welcome in every classroom" -Andrea Pastor, Student at Culver City High School

"I thought slay week brings an enlightening effect and environment to the school, bringing happiness to students who thought they weren't worthy or weren't comfortable with themselves and their body. I believe slay week definitely brought up the students' confidence in themselves and in everything they will do" -Claribel Alcantar, Student at Culver City High School

"I thought slay week at Culver City High School had a very positive effect on the student body. Unlike other spirit weeks and events it actually made an impact on others. Me personally, it helped me remind myself that the body I have is perfect and that I'm beautiful just the way I am (in a non cocky way) and it did the same effect for others. I'm really glad Gaby and Girls Build LA did this campaign" -Lucia Alcantar, Student at Culver City High School

"SLAY did an extremely amazing job for SLAY Week that brought 'Self Love & Acceptance' within the schools to students and they went over the top when Ashly Perez & Quinta Brunson from Buzzfeed came to campus"
-Edwin Del Refugio, Student at Culver City High School

THE WINNING POEM OF OUR POETRY CONTEST, USED AS INSPIRATION FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO SONG!

The skin I'm in
This was the title of a story I read as a child
This phrase now has a deeper meaning to me
I am proud be in the skin I'm in
I am happy with my purest self
I am content with my bare reflection
With my chocolate skin, my larger stomach, my kinky hair, my big legs, and my stretch marks
I am pleased with the skin I'm in
I have accepted myself, with my preconceived flaws and all
Dwelling on the impurities only drove me near insanity
Drove me to feel absolutely ugly
I was disgusted with the features that defined me
I was sickened
I should've never felt such an intense dislike for my own body
I wasted my time and energy being ashamed of myself
Something I could never escape
I realized I am still beautiful in the skin I'm in
Despite what others define as beautiful
I fought to truly believe I am strong, smart, athletic, funny, and loving
All of those factors make me beautiful
I am still beautiful with my cellulite on my thighs and the frizz to my hair
Beauty us not defined by only physical features
It is more than that
It is also the quirks that make us all individuals
I acquired my own definition of beauty
That's what I always wanted to be
I always wanted to be considered Beautiful
But I was always beautiful
I didn't need others to tell me
I didn't have to change myself, only slightly after my mindset
I had to believe I was beautiful
And so are you
You are beautiful in the skin you're in
You are beautiful in your purest state
You and your own definition of Beauty

You can believe
You can accept yourself
You can accept you color, you shape, your personality, yourself as a whole
As a remarkable human being
You can create your own trend
A trend of liberation
A trend of loving ourselves in the skin we are in
A trend of confidence and love
That is so radiant
And it will feel so great once We have obtained it

-Jenna Maxberry, winner of poetry contest
